FAQ — Backwoods Render

Question 1

What is tallow soap?

Accepted Answer

Tallow soap is made using rendered beef fat as the primary oil. It's one of the oldest and most traditional forms of soap making. Tallow produces a hard, long-lasting bar with a rich, creamy lather that's gentle on skin.

Question 2

What ingredients do you use?

Accepted Answer

Our soaps are made with rendered beef tallow, olive oil, fresh well water, lye (sodium hydroxide), and carefully selected fragrance oils. All lye is fully consumed during the saponification process — none remains in the finished bar.

Question 3

Is your soap safe for sensitive skin?

Accepted Answer

Many customers with sensitive skin find tallow soap to be gentler than commercial detergent-based bars. However, everyone's skin is different. If you have known allergies or sensitivities, review the ingredient list for each bar before purchasing. Our Unscented bar is a great option for those who prefer fragrance-free products.

Question 4

Are your soaps all-natural?

Accepted Answer

Our soaps are made with simple, traditional ingredients — rendered beef tallow, olive oil, well water, and lye. We use fragrance oils in our scented bars, which may be synthetic or a blend. We don't use artificial dyes, detergents, or unnecessary additives.

Question 5

What is hot-process soap making?

Accepted Answer

Hot-process is a traditional method where oils and lye water are cooked together — typically in a slow cooker or oven — until saponification is complete. Because the lye is fully neutralized during cooking, the finished soap is ready to use much sooner than cold-process. The result is a rustic, dense bar with a rich lather and no residual lye.

Question 6

How long does your soap cure?

Accepted Answer

Because we use the hot-process method, saponification is complete by the time the soap comes out of the mold. We still allow our bars to cure for one to two weeks so excess moisture can evaporate and the bar can harden up — but there's no need for the four-to-six week wait required by cold-process methods.

Question 7

Are your soaps made in small batches?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every bar is handcrafted in small batches right here in East Tennessee using the hot-process method. Small-batch production lets us maintain quality control and give each bar the attention it deserves.

Question 8

How long does shipping take?

Accepted Answer

Orders are typically processed and shipped within 2–4 business days. Standard shipping usually takes an additional 3–7 business days depending on your location. You'll receive a confirmation email once your order ships.

Question 9

Do you ship outside the United States?

Accepted Answer

At this time we only ship within the contiguous United States. We hope to expand shipping options in the future.

Question 10

What is your return policy?

Accepted Answer

Because our soaps are a personal care product, we are unable to accept returns on opened bars. If your order arrives damaged or there is an issue with your shipment, please reach out to us and we'll make it right.

Question 11

Can I cancel or change my order?

Accepted Answer

We begin processing orders quickly, but if you need to make a change please contact us as soon as possible. We'll do our best to accommodate requests before the order ships.

Question 12

How do I make my bar last longer?

Accepted Answer

Keep your bar on a well-draining soap dish between uses and allow it to dry out completely. Avoid leaving it sitting in standing water, which will cause it to soften and dissolve faster. A dry bar lasts significantly longer.

Question 13

How should I store unused bars?

Accepted Answer

Store unused bars in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. A linen closet or drawer works great — the bars will continue to harden and the scent will mellow nicely over time.

Question 14

How long does a bar last in use?

Accepted Answer

With proper care and a good draining soap dish, most customers find our bars last four to six weeks of daily use. Tallow soap tends to outlast many commercial bars because of its dense, hard composition.
